Why comic books?
In an attempt to reach the younger audiences, Historyman has created a series of exciting comic books for the next generation. These comic books are targeted towards grade level students and help to retell the stories of the real heroes in the fight for freedom.
Are these comic books based on fact?
Historyman drew from many sources to create this comic book series: visits to the South Carolina Archives, letters, Revolutionary War pension applications, actual copies of documents, biographies, important historical works of literature at the library, and microfiche copies of newspapers from the era. Although we don’t have a factual account of all the dialogue between characters at the time, the stories are based on what we do know about the history of the battles and characters themselves.
Where do these comic books take place?
- Dark Times Need Heroes is based in Sumter, South Carolina around May 27th, 1780.
- Huck’s Defeat takes place in Brattonsville, South Carolina in the York County area around July 12th, 1780.
- A Rocky Response takes place in Fairfield County around July 17th, 1780 in Chester, South Carolina.
- The Shattering occurs in Heath Springs, South Carolina around August 6th, 1780.
- On the Warpath to Cary’s Fort takes place in Kershaw County in Camden, South Carolina around August 15th, 1780.
- The Battle of Fishing Creek occurs in the outskirts of York County, South Carolina around August 18th, 1780.
- Buford's Quarter takes place around the community of Buford in Lancaster County, South Carolina around May 29th, 1780.
- Unlikely Heroes occurs in Edgefield County, South Carolina around May-June, 1781.
What are the features within each comic book?
In addition to the story, each comic book contains:
- A biography of Thomas Sumter with resources
- A map and timeline of American Revolution incidents
- Main characters on both Patriot and British sides
- A Footsteps of Heroes section highlighting someone associated with the story along with several educational resources
